Blog Hop: My Story

Today I'm sharing my story, how I got to where I am today and why. I'm participating in a Blog Hop inspired and hosted by Brigitte over at Unfettered Ink. When she shared her vision and invited others to join in the storytelling journey, I immediately jumped on board. Everyone has a story to tell and every story is important. Here's mine.

* * * * *

I'm a dancer. I will teach dance, choreograph dances and perform dance throughout my career. I'm about to venture out and begin this career, which is both exciting and completely terrifying. Upon learning that I'm a dancer and an artist, most people assume that I've been pursuing dance since I was a young girl. But I haven't. My first technique class was not until I was 28 years old. Say what?! Yep.

Let's back up a few years. I have always loved to dance. I inherited dancing genes... I have memories of my dad teaching me how to dance to oldies rock 'n roll in our kitchen. My mom loves to get down with her bad self. Wedding receptions were just big dance parties. I really don't remember ever not dancing. But I never was enrolled in formal dance classes as a little girl. We just didn't have the money. I played soccer instead. I loved soccer and was good at it, but oh how I wished to be a ballerina, too.

Fast forward: I graduated high school and started college. I signed up for extracurricular swing dance classes offered by the university's recreation department. Those classes were my initial launch into the dance world. Of course I wasn't content with simply learning and going out social dancing, so I busted my butt to join a troupe and began teaching and performing. Getting paid to do what I loved was amazing and surreal and a dream come true. But it was still just a hobby - a time-consuming hobby, but a hobby nonetheless - and nothing I seriously considered to attempt as a career.

Fast forward: it's summer 2007 and I was back in school trying to figure what to do with my life. I was quasi-following So You Think You Can Dance. I think it was season three or four. I don't really remember. What I do remember is one of the dancers. Her story completely caught my attention. She was on this show, yet she had only been training for about four years prior. Something inside of me turned on. I thought to myself, wait a minute, if she can do this, why can't I? I was a good dancer, I knew that in my heart. I also knew my passion for it. It was (and still is!) my heart and soul. I am absolutely happiest when dancing. So I made a decision to take a leap of faith. The next day I met with the head of the dance department to request to be a dance major. That fall, I donned my first ever pair of pink tights and black leotard and took my first ballet class.

Several of my friends thought I was crazy. I don't blame them. Starting ballet at age 28 is crazy... dance years are like doggie years and 28 is old! But I was determined. I needed to at least try. I would rather try and fail than not try at all and never know.

You know what? I didn't fail. I'm still here. Sure, it's been a very tough road. There has been plenty of blood, sweat, tears, ice and ibuprofen. But every minute has been worth it. And while I'm ancient in dance years (I'm now 33), better late than never, right?

One of the most important life lessons I've learned during this journey is that we are so much stronger and more capable than we ever give ourselves credit for. Just when we think we've reached the boundary, if we have just a little courage, even a tiny flicker, we discover that our limits are flexible and can be stretched to a new place. Little by little, inch by inch, we learn how much we can truly do and BE. Go ahead, try... there's nothing to lose, I promise.

Thank you for letting me share my story. I have been inspired by each of the stories that have been shared so far by the other Blog Hoppers, and I have a feeling you will be, too. Go visit Brigitte's blog to read some inspiring stuff!

And while you're at it, what's your story?

Birthday Bash

I almost forgot to post my birthday party pics!

My party was two Saturday's ago and my actual birthday was last week. It was a fabulous birthday, probably one of the best! Between my nephew's arrival and an amazing party, I was quite happy. It was exactly what I hoped for and more!

"Happy birthday to you..."

Make a wish!

It's not a true party without dancing!

My premier world tour!!!

Haha, JUST kidding. SO not "world"... not even national or state-wide... we are just heading up to Aspen for the week. And by we I mean Tour Dance Company. It's our first trip of the semester. Even though it's not world-wide - someday, someday... - it's still pretty cool that I get to spend the week in Aspen. I'm nervous about things, of course... did I remember all my costumes? do I have enough warm clothes? did I remember mascara? (yes, I hope and yes)...

I'm stressin' about remembering all the choreo and not messing it up, of course - I have serious anxiety about upsetting our professor who leads Tour. No wait. My BIGGEST concern is doing this trust-fall-from-kinda-high-up move that we've never practiced with me (I'm understudy for it) - hella scary. But whaddya gonna do? Balls to the wall and go for it, that's what! Boo-ya!!

Okay, I have to finish last-minute packing and fractically re-checking my bags... I'll be MIA 'round these parts 'til Friday, so have a FAB week and I'll see ya when I get back!! (If I had been on top of it, I would've scheduled some guest-blogging, but I'm not on top of it... next tour! lol.)

Mwah!!

Friday Friday Friday!!

I only worked three days this week, but boy am I glad it's Friday! Can't wait to see friends tonight that I haven't seen in a month, hang out with my mom up in the mountains tomorrow, and get down with my bad self at hip hop Sunday afternoon. I kick my weekend off tonight with a little barbecue, followed by a little swing dancing. Good stuff.

Happy weekend!!!

Fridaylicious!

Friday feels sooooooo good, and it's especially sweet after my week of Bad Funkiness. I won't claim that the Bad Funk has dissipated, but at least my spirits are a couple notches higher than they've been recently.

The appearance of the sun helped a lot... I was surprised to see it this morning, and was even more [pleasantly] surprised that it stuck around as long as it did today... the work lunch barbecue at work was a go and boy was I happy that I got to eat lunch outside.

Other little nuggets of goodness that are helping lighten my mood:

* LOTS of social time this weekend, starting with [another!] barbecue this evening, and then I'll head downtown for this month's First Friday Gallery Walk. Besides getting to walk around and enjoy the galleries in Old Town FoCo, the Imagination Fair is also taking place. I must say, for a small city, FoCo has some awesome arts and cultural events. Tomorrow I'll go watch my swing crew perform at our Pride in the Park festival (ranked #5 in the country for small-town Pride events by gay.com - woot, woot, FoCo!). Then to a friend's graduation party, and then to another friend's cocktail party. I can't freakin' wait.

* Between all my social play time tomorrow, I get to get my hair cut, f-i-n-a-l-l-y! I'm a couple months overdue, and since my hair doesn't want to do anything beyond a ponytail anymore, I'm not feeling the prettiest these days. My cute bangs shall soon return!

* I plan to bike to most of the above activities, defiantly armed with my rain jacket. Suck on it, gloomy weather!! Let me add that I HEART my bike, and I'm trying to save money by driving less, if possible, now that it's summer and the weather is [supposed to be] nice.

* Hip hop hooray on Sunday! Even though every Sunday night I get my butt absolutely whooped by the hip hop teacher, I LOVE Sundays. I'm getting stronger, my arms are nice and defined, and those two-and-half-hours of intensity are pure CHURCH for me. I leave excited for life and being a dancer.

That's all for now... Time to get my barbecue on.

Happy Friday, everyone!

And summer begins...

Now I know that its not technically summer yet, as in the season dictated by the calendar, but as a student the end of the school year always marks the beginning of summer. So my summer has begun!

And what will my summer entail, you ask?

Well, like all my summers, my work hours go up to full time so I get to play the Working Girl role. As much as I'd LUUUUV to go to the pool daily, drive myself all over Colorado for some hiking adventures, get weekly mani/pedis, whisk myself away on vacations abroad (sailing in the Mediterranean? safari in Africa? diving with the sharks in Australia? someday, someday...) or shop til I drop to my little heart's content, this girl's gotta work. Like most people.

So there's that. Not terribly exciting, but definitely the normal routine. And I'll fit in the occasional pool day, hike, shopping trip, and at-home mani/pedi, so have no fear. I will have some fun this summer.

But. Wait. There is something not normally part of my summer schedule that will definitely be fun and adventurous - I'm going to Chicago in July!!

About a week and a half ago I found out about my acceptance into a dance intensive program with Deeply Rooted Dance in Chicago. And I am VERY excited indeed!

The scoop: Deeply Rooted were the guest artists at CSU last spring (2008) and taught a master class for us. I immediately took to the company - their movement, their aesthetic, their personable approach. They told us about their summer intensive and I wanted so badly to go last summer, but it was not enough time for me to get the money together. So I told myself that I would definitely go this summer. Okay, so I started saving money and early this year I contacted the company to get the ball rolling. We were in touch for awhile, discussing how I would audition for them (go to Chicago? send in a DVD?). Then life happened - I got busy with school, I had to dip into my savings to pay bills and eat, you know the drill - and we lost touch. I had sent a couple follow up emails, but didn't want to be a pest, so I backed off. I waited and waited to hear from them, but nothing. The end of April rolled around and I started thinking that it might not happen after all. This bummed me out and I got discouraged, so I started resigning myself to the fact that there would be no Chicago again this summer. And I started convincing myself that it was okay and not a total bust, for there are summer intensives in Colorado that I could attend. [I'm rolling my eyes at myself right now.]

Then my BFF and I met for a long-overdue girls night out. The conversation came around to my dancing adventures and I told her my sob story, but she would have none of it. She told me that if this is something I really, really want in my heart, then I will find a way to make it happen. If that means I get a second, part-time job and eat ramen and pb&j daily, then so be it. She told me that giving up would mean that I would spend yet another summer just working full time and taking the occasional class at a local studio, but going after Chicago could mean a huge resume boost and dance oppurtunity. I knew all of this in my heart, and it was EXACTLY the kick in the ass I needed to snap me out of my woe-is-me-I'm-not-going-to-Chicago stupor.

That was a Friday night. Sunday night I sent them an email asking if it was too late to sign up. Monday afternoon I got an email back saying that I did just miss the registration deadline, BUT, if I mailed them an audition video, my resume and a letter of intent within seven days, they would keep registration open for me. Game on! [This was the email that propelled my week to mach-ten a couple weeks ago, mentioned here.]

I called up BFF, told her the scoop and we dove right into a game plan. Tuesday night she taped me doing a solo and afterwards her hubby got it on a DVD for me (I'm not very tech-savvy). Wednesday morning I whipped out my resume and letter, and that afternoon I forked over $22 and sent it off to Chicago via FedEx overnight. Whew! And then I settled in expecting to wait a week or so before hearing back.

Nope.

That Thursday afternoon at work, just after lunch, I received an email from DRP telling me "Congratulations on your acceptance to DRP's Summer Intensive"!!! I almost fell out of my chair with surprise and had to restrain myself from running down the hallway screaming. Hell yes!!!!!

SO. I'm going to Chicago in July [insert HUGE grin here]. Thanks to my BFF's tough love speech and my propensity to work great under pressure, I get to spend part of my summer training and networking with an awesome dance company in Chi-town!!!!

God, I love summer!!!
